TURIN, Italy – The Kapunungan sa mga Bisaya sa Austria and the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy joined the celebration of the European Sinulog Festival 2019 or the Feast of the Sto. Niño de Cebu in a grand procession here.
About 1,000 performers from Filipino communities in Europe and over 3,000 devotees and pilgrims participated in the Sinulog Festival, which is celebrated every two years in the continent.
Sinulog is a ritual and traditional dance done by Filipino Catholics particularly in the central part of the Philippines, in honor to the Holy Child Jesus or known as Santo Niño de Cebu.
“As the host city for 2019, we would like to underline the importance of the event as a religious feast: an occasion to show our fellow Italian brothers, sisters and friends our Filipino faith as a Catholic country,” the Filipino Chaplaincy of Turin said.
Various folk presentations were showcased in the streets where the parade took place. Filipino groups from European countries like Germany, Austria, Spain, as well as UAE and cities of Italy, including Bassano del Grappa, Padova, Vicenza, Bergamo, Triesti and Milan presented their colorful dances.
The festivities begun with the celebration oft he Holy Eucharist at San Giovannino church Cso. Vittorio Emanuele II. The Grand Sinulog Festival Choir sang during the mass, where Mandy Salonga, Nancy Agbon, Bernadite Steiger and Randy Ilagan, all members of the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy in Austria were included in the grand choir. A dramatization of the birth of Christianity in the Philippines was likewise staged followed by the presentation of the Sinulog Festival Queens. Delegates showcased their Sinulog dance while to be followed by recognition and awarding ceremonies
Ambassador to the Holy See Grace Princesa also graced the occasion. Hon. Monica Cerutti, Regional Deputy Assesor of Piemonte was overwhelmed by the unity of the Filipinos in this part of the continent.
Rev. Fr. Paolino Bumanglag, National Head of the Filipino Chaplains of Entire Italy and Chaplain of the Filipino Chaplaincy of Vicenza, announced that the next Sinulog Festival will be held in the Vatican City in 2021. The Sinulog Festival 2021 will coincide with the celebration of the 500th devotion to Sto. Nino.
The first European Sinulog Festival was held in Bergamo, Italy in 2015.
