12 June 2018 – Filipino community in Austria celebrated the 120th anniversary of Philippine Independence last June 09 in Vienna at the Marriott Hotel, Vienna. The event, which bannered the theme, “Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban , Alay Sa kinabukasan,” a celebration of the Filipino heritage and tradition, as well as a reminder to Filipinos in Austria of their roots and their responsibilities toward their country.
“Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban , Alay Sa kinabukasan…” the theme of this year’s celebration acknowledges the great changes that took place in the Philippines since the country had been bestowed of its independence.
In his opening remarks, Council of Filipino Associations Chairman Elmer Blanco challenged every Filipino to bear in mind that, wherever he or she may be, has a role to play in the nation’s development. Our hard-earned independence comes with responsibility to build a prosperous nation founded on truth, justice and equity.
Guided by this year’s Independence Day theme, “Kalayaan 2018: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban, Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan,” Blanco call on every Filipino to support the momentum towards positive and constructive change.
“Wherever we find ourselves in this dynamic world, we should not fail to explore ways on how to contribute to our country’s “present story”, not just history, through our continued resilience, cohesiveness, and team Spirit,” Blanco said.
In her message, Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad commended the Filipino community in Austria for the support and cooperation given to the Embassy.
The Ambassador likewise acknowledged the strong bonds of friendship between the Philippines and Austria, enriched and strengthened over the years by the shared values and enduring people-to-people linkages.
Ambassador Natividad also reminded the Filipino community of their roots and their responsibilities to their country. She extolled the contributions of Filipinos overseas to the country’s development and encouraged those present to continue doing their share towards nation-building.
The celebration of the 120th Philippine Independence Day Ball in Vienna also showcased cultural performances of the rich heritage and colourful traditions of the different groups of Filipinos from northern to southern Philippines.
It was truly an evening to remember as guests dressed in a dazzling array of Filipiniana and contemporary evening gowns and formal attire celebrated the Philippines’ national birthday with a stunning showcase of Filipino talents, creativity, and artistry. It was an unforgettable and meaningful event that projected a favourable image and positive reputation of the Philippines and the Filipino people.
A participant of the Independence Day celebration also enjoined the Filipinos in Austria not to waver from the straight and righteous path, and to continue respecting both Philippine and Austrian laws.
The event provided an opportunity for Filipinos to see old friends, meet new ones, and come together in the spirit of independence and love of country, and renewal of their commitment to being a Filipino.
