The Philippines’ first bobsled team made a courtesy call at the Philippine Embassy in Vienna, Austria on Monday, January 12, 2018. Consul Leilani Feliciano welcomed the team, who competed in the Europa Cup Championship in Igls, Tirol, Austria last January.
The Philippine National Bobsled Luge and Skeleton Association, (PNBLSA) bobsledders have been training in Austria since October, in partnership with Olympiaworld Innsbruck, the top athletic and sports authority of the province of Tirol, which has generously provided board, lodging, training, technical assistance, and equipment for the team.
Consul Thelmo Cunanan, President and CEO of the Philippine National Bobsled Luge and Skeleton Association, Inc., said that the PNBLSA is dedicated to promoting and developing the sport in the Philippines. “Our team is making history. We see the potential for this sport in the Philippines and Asia and we are confident that our athletes will perform admirably. We have made the first step. There is still a long journey ahead. Our ultimate goal is to represent the Philippines with pride and honor at the Winter Olympics in 2022. We will be preparing for that. In the meantime, we will be competing in bobsled competitions around the world, to give our athletes more experience.”
The PNBLSA officially launched the Philippine Bobsled Team last November 16, 2017 at the Landhaus (provincial headquarters) of Tirol in Innsbruck. Attending the event were members of the media, Filipino community in Tirol, high government and socio-civic leaders, and diplomats led by Philippine Ambassador to Austria Zenaida Angara- Collinson and Honorary Philippine Consul General Christian Traweger.
The sponsors of the PNBLSA include Red Horse Extra Strong Beer, Consulate of the Philippines in Tirol, First Filipino International Movement, and IMAD (Institut fur Markforschung and Datenanalyse).
