Abdul Candao, one of the most talented Filipino tenors and Aries Caces, one of the most versatile Filipino concert pianists presented their repertoire “A Merry Night of Song” before Filipino and Austrian audience at the Kirche Salvator am Wienerfeld on Sunday, November 12, 2017.
The concert offered a mixed repertoire of classics as well as contemporary pieces to the great delight of the Filipino and Austrian audience.
The evening concert went on with people all mesmerized with brilliantly sung numbers – especially the Filipino pieces – Lagi kitang naalala, Tunay na Paggiliw, Hangin at Kalesa.
Candao was born in Davao. He was first prize winner in the National Music Competition for Young Artists in 1982. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from UST under the late Prof. Kathy Sternberg. He left for Europe for further training in 1991. While there, he attended the Opera School of the Vienna Conservatory of Music. Among his first professional engagements in Europe were as Almaviva in Barber of Seville and the title role in the modern opera Jush Tush, which was also recorded. Abdul obtained his diploma in 1995. He has since performed in numerous operas all over Europe and in Manila. Among the roles he did were Tony in West Side Story, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Sou-Choung in Land of Smiles, Governor in Candide, Faust in Faust, Alfred in Die Fledermaus and Rinuccio in Giannni Schichi. He also spent three years with the musical Elisabeth in Vienna after attending the Conservatory and has given concerts in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, the UK and in the Philippines.
Aries Caces studied in Graz and Vienna, obtaining his diploma under the eminent Paul Badura-Skoda. Winning the auditions at the Hochschule for Musik, he performed Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” with the Hochshule Symphony Orchestra in Vienna’s Golden Hall.
He obtained his “Diplom” in conducting under Prof. Unos Lajovic, and his Master’s Degree in Piano Performance under Roland Keller. A recipient of several scholarships here and abroad, he has concertized extensively in Europe and the USA.
Caces has the distinction of having performed the five piano concertos of Beethoven, for which he functioned both as soloist and conductor of the UST Symphony Orchestra.
