The first-ever display of Filipino culinary ingenuity delighted not only the Filipino crowd but as well as international guests in the first Filipino cooking contest held on June 18, 2016 in Vienna, Austria.
“The successful contest is a testimony of the keen interest of the Filipinos in promoting Filipino culture in Austria,” one of the international visitors commented.
The contest is done “to build awareness and appreciation of Philippine cuisine and culture, as well as to highlight existing and emerging Filipino culinary talents in Austria.”
Arlene Castaneda of Sentro ng Kultura at Wika ng Austria at Pilipinas expressed her gratitude to the participants and guests for joining this pioneering event.
“The Sentro wants to encourage Filipino talents to exercise their creativity and skill in elevating the quality of taste and presentation of Philippine dishes.” Castaneda said.
Cathy Sudaria joined the cooking competition to showcase her cooking prowess and expertise and at the same time to show her support for the projects of the Sentro ng Kultura at Wika ang Austria at Pilipinas.
“Siyempre, happy ako. Na-prove ko sa sarili ko na pwede pala akong sumali sa mga competition na ganito at i- share ang aking talent. It is also a way to support the Sentro,” Oyeth Grössling, one of the participants commented.
A panel of three judges together with the audience picked the winners of the competition.
The international judges were impressed with the creative dishes presented to them and the amazing talents of Filipinos.
Ms. Carmen Pacaigue delighted the judges and the audience with her unique first ever Adobo. She bagged the first prize award for her adobo.
The SENTRO cooking competition is hoped to be a template activity in the coming years in the advocacy towards appreciation of Philippine heritage and culture through cuisine.
