Filipino women, led by the BABAYLAN Austria gathered at the Hotel Austria Wien in Vienna on March 12, 2016 to celebrate the International Women’s Day.
Imelda Papai, the newly elected President of Babaylan Austria expressed her gratitude to the „kababayans“ who attended the celebration.
Cecille Cech, former Babaylan President and Adviser of the women’s group noted that the Babaylan Austria has been doing a lot to promote women’s empowerment and full participation in development processes through sharing of experiences, information and resources.
The officers and members of Babaylan Austria expressed their sentiments of what woman should be.
Philippine Ambassador to Austria, Maria Zeneida Angara Collinson served as guest of honor during the celebration. The Ambassador congratuled the Babaylan Austria for providing channels for campaign on women issues.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for being an inspiration and strength. Your dedication in promoting meaningfully the various concern of Filipino women in Austria particularly women empowerment, compliment our effort in the embassy to advance the rights of multi-faceted interest of women,” the Ambassador said.
„I am very happy to be here and I want to congratulate Babaylan for celebrating womens day. I think you are one of the organizations that really take to heart and put into action not only what it means to be a woman but also to be a Filipino,“ Ambassador Angara-Collinson said.
Lorna Titgemeyer, Babaylan Adviser mentioned that the celebration of International Women’s Day in Austria would like to raise awareness on the problems of women migrants.
The main speaker of the International Women’s Day Celebration of the Babaylan, Ms. Betty Moore, Chinese/Japanese-Filipina, and Babaylan UK leader cited that the celebration of women’s day underscores the practice of gender equality and pays tribute to the resilience of Filipino women,
Moore challenged the Pinays in Austria to remain cool, recognize and fight for their rights as women and work further for women empowerment.
The event was also graced by Babaylan leaders from differents parts of Europe.
United Nations International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually worldwide on March 8 to highlight the social, political, and economic achievements of women, while drawing world attention to areas requiring further action. International Women’s Day encourages advocacy for women’s advancement around the world in all aspects of life.
