The Filipino community in Austria celebrated the 117th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence held at the Vienna Marriott Hotel on Saturday, 13 June 2015. The new Philippine Ambassador to Austria, Maria Zeneida Angara-Collinson was the guest speaker during the event.
The Ambassador read the Independence Day messages of President Benigno S. Aquino III which dwelt on the theme “Kalayaan 2015: Tagumpay sa Pagbabagong Nasimulan, Abot-Kamay na ng Bayan.” (Triumphs Through Reforms, Within Nation’s Reach). President Aquino’s message emphasized on the significant role of OFWs in fighting the war against poverty.
The Ambassador likewise challenged the Pinoys in Austria to become partners of the government in pursuing reforms that would be the key for them to attain the progress and prosperity that all Filipinos are aspiring for.
“The Council of Filipino Associations in Austria (CFAA) and the Filipino Community are happy and heartened that we are given the chance to celebrate our unique heritage, especially that we commemorate the 117th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence,” M. Concepcion Segura, CFAA Chairman said in her opening remarks.
This celebration is a yearly tradition to share, promote and perpetuate the Philippine Cultural Heritage in a diverse society and to help the Filipinos in Austria achieve visibility in the Austrian society.
The Kapunongan ng mga Bisaya sa Austria and the Mindanao Association in Austria presented a cultural Journey to the three islands in the Philippines with Filipino folk dances.
The Council of Filipino Associations in Austria (CFAA) and friends likewise presented with bravour the traditional Rigodon de Honor Dance, as highlight of this year’s 117th Philippine Independence Day Celebration in Austria.
To top it all, the celebration is a tremendous success. One big event, the Barrio Fiesta on July 25, 2015 is again unfolding and surely be more exciting. Indeed, such celebration is a chance to see and experience Filipinos coming together to realize a significant occasion in order to have a real sense of national independence and pride.
The Annual Philippine Independence Day Celebration is a traditional observance of the date on which Filipino’s declared their independence from three centuries of Spanish rule. On this day, Filipinos worldwide commemorate the heroism of Filipino revolutionaries in the long struggle for freedom against centuries of foreign occupants. The event also serves as a celebration of Philippine heritage and pride.
