MANILA – Typhoon ”Chedeng” (international name: Maysak) slowed down but has maintained its strength, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said ”Chedeng” slowed down, moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph).
The typhoon, however, maintained its strength, packing 175 kph maximum sustained winds and gusts of up to 210 kph.
The typhoon was spotted 970 kms east southeast of Virac, Catanduanes as of 4 p.m.
At a press briefing, PAGASA weather forecaster Jun Galang said the slowing down of the typhoon could affect its direction or wind strength.
”Ang implikasyon kapag bumagal, either mag-iiba ng direksyon o lalakas,” Galang said.
PAGASA said it expects to raise public storm warning signal number 1 over Bicol provinces on Thursday evening.
Once signal number 1 is hoisted, sea travel over these areas will be suspended, the state weather bureau said.
PAGASA said Chedeng will make landfall over the eastern coast of Aurora-Isabela late Sunday morning. It will traverse northern Luzon, and then exit the Philippine area of responsibility through Ilocos Sur Monday afternoon.
PAGASA said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the 150-200-kilometer radius of the typhoon.
Storm surges and sea surface waves of less than 3 meters are possible over the eastern coasts of Quezon, Aurora and Isabela.
It is advisable ”to refrain from holding outdoor activities particularly along beaches of eastern Luzon starting Saturday,” PAGASA said in its advisory.
GOOD WEATHER UNTIL GOOD FRIDAY
Galang said Eastern Luzon will still experience good weather until Friday, April 3, PAGASA said.
There is possibility of isolated rains or thunderstorms over the central and western sections of the country until Friday.
Stormy weather is expected over central northern Luzon on Sunday.
Greater Metro Manila Area will have occasional rains and gusty winds while the rest of the country will have warm and humid condition.
Rough to very rough sea conditions over Luzon’s eastern seaboard are expected upon the arrival of the typhoon.
TYPHOON TO WEAKEN
PAGASA expects Chedeng to weaken further as it moves slowly towards the eastern seaboard of Luzon.
This is also the forecast of the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), which has already downgraded the status of Chedeng from ”super typhoon” to a ”typhoon”.
In its 5 p.m. (Manila time) advisory, JTWC said that from its maximum sustained wind strength of 115 knots (212.98 kph) at 6 a.m. today, the typhoon will weaken to 75 knots (138.9 kph) by 6 a.m. on April 4.
PAGASA uses 10-minute average readings for a cyclone’s wind speed, compared to the 1-minute average readings of JTWC. This means that PAGASA readings produce lower average maximum sustained wind speeds for cyclones.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) has a similar forecast. In its 5:35 p.m. update, JMA said Chedeng was packing maximum wind speed of 95 knots (175.94 kph) near the center. It forecasts Chedeng’s wind speed to weaken to 65 knots (120.38 kph) by April 4.
