The Kiwanis Club of Baden in Lower Austria, together with Lions Club International, Austria Chapter ceremonially presented checks as their contribution to the relief operations for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Led by the former Mayor of Baden, Prof. August Breininger, the group met with Philippine Ambassador Lourdes Yparraguirre on Friday, January 9, 2014 at the Philippine Embassy in Vienna.
Engr. Wolfgang Brückner, President of the Kiwanis Club Baden presented a check totaled 20,000 €. Mr. Walter Götz, Lions Club Board member informed the Philippine Embassy here that the club collected a total amount of 150,000 Euros for the typhoon victims.
„The Kiwanis Club is working closely with other humanitarian agencies and partners in the severely affected areas to support their efforts to assess the situation and respond rapidly to help people in need,” said Kiwanis Club President, Engr. Wolfgang Buchner told ABS-CBN News
Kiwanis Club Baden will particularly support the „Roof Kit“ project of Red Cross, which aims to provide roofs to affected families in Tacloban and Leyte.
„Lions Club International would like to inform that Lions Club Austria collected in two months 150,000 € and Lions Club Germany collected 500,000 €. This means that these two countries are helping together for the reconstruction and rebuilding projects in the typhoon affected areas,“ Mr. Walter Götz, Lions Club Austria told ABS-CBN News.
Mr. Götz further mentioned that the donation will go directly to Lions Club Philippines, since it reaches the victims faster and is more efficient due to the fact that the local chapter of Lions Club in the area already have people on the ground who are more familiar with the immediate needs of the victims.
Mr. Michael Opriesnig, Deputy Secretary General of Austrian Red Cross together with Ambassador Lourdes Yparrguirre, Cultural Attache Toni Bosa, Deputy Minister Charlie Manangan and leaders of the Filipino Community witnessed the presentation of the checks.
„On behalf of the Austrian Red Cross, I am very grateful for the generous support of Kiwanis and Lions Club. Just after the supertyphoon. Red Cross Austria had responded immediately and sent contingencies for humanitarian support,“ Mr. Michael Opriesnig, Deputy Secretary General of Austrian Red Cross said.
Mr. Opriesnig affirmed that the Austrian Red Cross is still helping in some areas to provide pure potable water and sanitation.
Ambassador Yparraguirre thanked Kiwanis Club Baden, Lions Club Austria and Red Cross for their continuing efforts and assistance for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
„Your huge contributions will go a long way in helping our nation as we begin this challenging task of recovery and rebuilding. With these great act of giving, you have shown once again your boundless compassion to people all over the world,“ the ambassador said.
The ambassador likewise informed the generous donors that the Philippine Government is now identifying vulnerable areas and priority needs of the people of Central Philippines in order to focus on long-term reconstruction and rebuilding of homes, schools and infrastructure and the restoration of livelihoods.
During the past months after the supertyphoon an overwhelming and outpouring of generosity and solidarity had been demonstrated by Austrians, foreigners and the public, who generously gave from their pockets and shared graciously from their hearts.
